Balancing life with kids can be quite the juggling act. It's like trying to keep a dozen plates spinning at the same time, while also keeping a tiny human from eating dirt. But fear not, my fellow parents, for I have discovered the secret to success: caffeine. Lots and lots of caffeine.
Actually we can't deny that being a parent is a challenging and fulfilling role, but finding balance can be difficult. Juggling the responsibilities of parenthood with work, personal relationships, and self-care can leave many feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.
This session we've been working with our students on balancing on one foot. Balancing schedules and balancing on one foot may seem like two very different things, but they both require a certain level of skill and focus. Prioritize and manage your time to balance your busy schedule and find your center of gravity and focus to balance when standing on one foot. Balancing is a life skill we love to encourage both on and off the dance floor!
One of the biggest balancing challenges I find as a parent is managing time. With so many demands on your time, it can be difficult to prioritize tasks and activities. Parents often find themselves sacrificing their own needs and desires in order to meet the needs of their children. This can lead to burnout and a caffeine addiction.
In all seriousness though, it's important to find a routine that works for you and your family. Maybe that means waking up before the sun to fit in a workout (although that would NEVER work for me as a night owl), or setting a day that is your day to sleep in (now we are talking!), or maybe it means embracing the chaos and letting your kids join in on your yoga mat. Whatever it takes to keep your sanity intact, do it.
It can be overwhelming trying to juggle work, family and personal commitments, but it's important to remember that you can't do it all at once. Take a deep breath and make a schedule that works for you. Don't be afraid to say no to extra tasks or delegate some responsibilities to others. Remember, it's okay to take a break and give yourself some time to relax and recharge.
For me, finding balance as a parent requires my strong support system. Many parents feel isolated and overwhelmed, and struggle to find the time and energy to nurture personal relationships and friendships. Without a support system in place, finding balance can feel impossible. Whether it be "Wine Wednesdays", parking lot parties, a walk with friends, or a tap class, creating your support system is a must.
And if you happen to wobble, forget you made plans to go for that walk, or lose your balance in any way, don't worry, it happens to the best of us! Just laugh it off and try again. Who knows, maybe you'll even discover some new muscles you never knew you had.
In the end, balancing schedules and balancing on one foot both require patience, practice, and a positive attitude. So take it one step at a time (pun intended) and remember to have fun along the way.
So here's to all the parents out there trying to balance it all. May your coffee be strong, your patience be endless, and your sense of humor be well intact. Cheers! ☕️
